10-Week Group Class - Greek Tragedy
Join me for an in depth course on Greek Tragedy - a 10 week exploration and deep dive into two great works:- The Oresteia by Aeschylus (weeks 1-6)The Oresteia is a gripping trilogy of murder, family conflict, and courtroom drama. Beginning with Agamemnon's triumphant return from the Trojan War and ending with the first trial in human history, it tells the story of how ancient Greece imagined the birth of justice itself. The Oresteia is essential reading for anyone interested in Greek mythology and provides invaluable background for understanding the world of Homer's Odyssey.- Medea by Euripides (weeks 7-10)In Medea, Euripides presents one of the most unforgettable figures in Greek literature. Renowned for his complex and compelling female characters, he transformed tragedy into a powerful exploration of human psychology. The play follows Medea, a princess betrayed by her husband Jason, as she plots a devastating revenge. A gripping drama of passion, betrayal, and justice, Medea remains as shocking and thought-provoking today as it was in ancient Athens.------------------------Most Greek tragedies were written in the 5th century BC and performed in Athens. They are the foundation of how we tell stories in the western world, inspiring Shakespeare and countless other playwrights, filmmakers and novelists. Greek tragedy was also instrumental in the development of psychology, notably the work, Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung.
This course will begin on the weekend 4th / 5th of July.Each week, on Zoom, we will go through these two tragedies, key moment by key moment, exploring the story, the surrounding Greek mythology and the influence on art, culture, philosophy and modern-day literature as well as modern day adaptations, staging, and performance.
Classes will take place once a week at the time slot -Saturday or Sunday at 16:30 UK time (11:30 AM Eastern time, 08:30 Pacific)
During the week you will recieve three passages to prepare and read which we will discuss in the class.
Groups will be between 10 and 15 people
It is £350 for the 10-week course (£35/h)
